The National Park Service is being extremely responsive with efforts to repair the damaged trail. They immediately sent their trail expert with trail workers to deal with the badly damaged bridge that was declared “total damage” and not passable since mid-April. We have arranged for charter "FLY-IN" packages while the trail is closed. We thank you very much for your understanding. Mahalo! Molokai Mule Ride - R.M.Horner, President & GM E. Buzzy Sproat, Vice Pres. Remember that the trail remains CLOSED and the current "temporary" structure is for state workers only -no mules or tour hikers are allowed on the trail and Park Rangers will issue citations with fines to anyone found hiking on the trail. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 Information just received from the National Park Superintendant via E-mail today: New dates for BRIDGE INSTALLATION: OCTOBER 10-17, 2010. It will take 4-5 weeks. ** These revised projections based on present information. After the bridge is completed, there will be re-training and preparing of mules with exercising before we can reopen with trail rides. Friday, June 25, 2010 Per Steve Prokop, Superintendant, National Park Service, Kalaupapa: the Contractor has reported pre-fabrication of the replacement bridge is being concluded and will be shipped by next week. They were hoping to start construction by mid July but the Government has called for a Soil Conservation Experiment. This moves our re-start date back into August, and they are looking at a month or more for construction. Monday, MAY 24, 2010 Design work and pre-fabrication of parts of the bridge continues... Target for completion is by the end of July with a tentative re-opening of the trail in mid-August, 2010(?) Monday, MAY 17, 2010 National Park Service Contract signed today with the Contractor to restore the trail and build the new bridge. Monday, MAY 10, 2010 Per Steve Prokop, Superintendant, National Park Service, Kalaupapa: The Contractor to restore the trail and build the new bridge was selected and contract signing takes place on May 17th. Pre-Fabrication of parts of the bridge has already started and will be shipped within the next 3-4 weeks. Target for completion is by the end of July 2010. Monday, MAY 4, 2010 1000Hrs. (10:00am) The trail remains closed for repairs. The National Park continues their repair efforts and determination whether and when to allow Hikers access via the Kalaupapa Trail... Tuesday, APRIL 20, 2010 1900Hrs. (7:00pm) A “make shift" bridge has been constructed to allow the state and federal employees to hike down to work and back. The rangers will NOT allow other people “access” via the trail. The National Park will be bringing in their STRUCTURAL ENGINEER and RISK MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST to make a determination whether and when to allow Hikers access via the Kalaupapa Trail. Monday, APRIL 19, 2010 Daily work and progress continues and has been going on since this past Thursday(April 15)... We are hoping that we will be able to operate with our mules again within the next three weeks… More details will come after the engineers and construction company finalizes the evaluation, design and workplan. We thank you for your continued patience... Tuesday, APRIL 13, 2010 The past week of heavy rain created a mudslide and serious damage to a footbridge on the "pali trail," which forced the National Park Service today to close the only land route to the Kalaupapa Hansen's disease settlement, which remains accessible by plane or boat. The mules can't pass at all, and a person would need to "hug the mountainside" to get by the slippery bridge and eroded soil but it's much too dangerous. The trail is unsafe, and no one should try to climb down it. Despite the closure of the trail and the suspension of mule rides, Molokai Mule Ride is still busy scheduling charter air flights for visitors into the park and settlement.
